As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, it’s time to evaluate your wardrobe and prepare for the upcoming winter season. A thoughtful edit not only clears clutter but also ensures that you have a functional and stylish collection of clothing ready to see you through the colder months. Here are some expert tips to help you transition smoothly from summer to winter.

Assess Your Current Wardrobe

Before diving into your editing process, take a good look at what you already have. Go through your summer clothes and categorize them into three piles: keep, donate/sell, and repair. Ask yourself the following questions for each piece:

– Do I love this item?

– Have I worn it in the last year?

– Does it fit my current style and body shape?

– Is it in good condition?

This self-assessment will help you determine what truly belongs in your wardrobe.

Step away from the shops!

I know you might be surprised to hear me saying this! But just because I am a personal shopper, doesn’t mean that shopping for more is always the right thing to do. Quite obviously, most can’t afford to buy new clothes. And from a sustainability perspective, it is importance to buy less/wear more

Before you decide to invest in anything new, you need to be clear on what is in your wardrobe, and what the gaps are

Invest in Versatile Pieces

As you transition into winter, consider adding versatile clothing items that can be layered. Look for:

Lightweight fine base layers that can be layered under dresses and sweaters.. Here is my blog on how to layer and still look stylish

Cardigans and lightweight jackets; Easy to throw on over summer pieces for added warmth.

Transitional dresses: Dresses that can be worn with tights and boots are a great way to extend your summer wardrobe.

Choose neutral colours that can easily mix and match with your existing items.

Beware the trends

Again, you might be surprised at me saying this. It is part of my job to be aware of what the trends are, and to share them with you. But style is not about the trends. Being stylish is wearing items that suit your body shape, colour palette and make you feel confident.

My personal style is usually quite classic, and I love to play around with some trends but try not to invest in those too heavily. You don’t’ want to be looking at an expensive item in your wardrobe this time next year that you feel you can’t wear because it has gone out of fashion!

Get it stored away!

If you are lucky enough to have a gigantic wardrobe, you do not need to worry about this element. But I always store my off-season clothes away. It allows space to see what you have for the current season. I use these vacuum storage bags from amazon – have done for years. It makes everything a bit smaller to get it stored into the attic
