The most important thing in your winter wardrobe?

The change in the temperature was clear to me before I even got out of bed this morning. It is time!! Time to start putting the summer clothes away and figure out how to dress for Autumn.

When you live in Ireland/UK, I think the most important purchase of your winter is your coat. We wear it, arguably more than any other piece of clothing and it needs to fulfil numerous needs.

It needs to keep you warm, but look elegant over your work wear. It needs to be comfortable but chic enough for an evening out. Often it is your first impression and  it’s a statement that can reflect your personality and style. However, with so many options available, choosing the perfect winter coat can be overwhelming. Here are six crucial factors to consider to help you find a coat that suits you perfectly.

And I have done some work for you, and I am sharing some of my favourite finds in the shops for this season

Body Shape and Fit

Understanding your body shape is vital in finding a coat that flatters your figure. For example, if you have an hourglass shape, consider coats that cinch at the waist to highlight your curves. If you’re more rectangular, look for styles that add volume, such as peacoats or belted coats. Always try on different styles and sizes to find the fit that feels comfortable and looks great on you. Remember, a well-fitted coat can elevate your entire outfit.

What is your style personality?

Your winter coat should reflect your personal style. Whether you prefer classic, modern, bohemian, or sporty looks, there’s a coat that matches your aesthetic. If you love timeless pieces, a wool overcoat or a trench coat might be your best bet. For those who enjoy contemporary styles, consider oversized puffer jackets or tailored parkas. Don’t shy away from colours and patterns that resonate with your personality—winter doesn’t have to mean dull and drab!

What do you need it to do for you?

Where do you plan on wearing your coat? Will you be commuting, attending formal events, or spending time outdoors? Features like pockets, hoods, and zippers can enhance functionality. For example, if you often carry items, look for coats with spacious pockets. My preference is to wear my coat slightly oversized so that I can layer it over a blazer or chunky knits. Oversized shapes are a definite shift in silhouettes this season

Spree vs steal

Investing in a high-quality winter coat can save you money in the long run. Check details like stitching, lining, and zippers—these can be indicators of quality. There are so many “lovely looking” coats available on the high street, some of the quality is horrible – that shiny, plasticky feel, which is just really high in nylon and no wool at all. If you are thinking of woollen-style coat, have a look at the breakdown of the fabric.

Sfera Checked double-breasted classic coat is bang on trend with this heritage check. It is versatile and will match the browns, creams and burgundy that are everywhere

Sfera burgundy scarf coat: the scarf coat takes away the need to think about how to style it. It looks complete in its own right. The scarf is detachable on most of them. And this burgundy is the colour of the season

Cos brown belted coat: Its effortlessly classy and wearable over casual and dressy outfits. Brown is another strong colour for this season and will be so versatile. I like the belted coat for cinching in your waist and making the most of your curves.

Anthropologie cropped trench

A cropped trench is quite a casual look and incredibly easy to wear particularly over jeans. It has that Parisian chic and is available in lots of nude colour options. This red one is a nice alternative

Me & Em cape:

Capes are making a bit of a comeback so this is a lovely option in the chocolate brown. You could have the most basic of base layers on underneath and just add this to add style to your look

Walk in wardrobe has done these puffas for a couple of years now and they come in various colours. If your lifestyle is less office and more Mum, this would be a fabulous option for the school run and out with friends for coffee

Aligne Barn jacket

Thanks to Prada the utility barn jacket is popping up in all of our high street. It is a simple and unpretentious look and links to the rage for heritage wardrobe pieces this season
