As a personal stylist, I understand the struggle of staying warm while looking chic during the colder months. Layering your pieces can be a bit of an art and it takes confidence!
There’s nothing worse than selecting your gorgeous outfit for your occasion and then having to drown yourself in a coat that does nothing to compliment the look!
Layering is not just a practical way to keep cozy; it’s also an opportunity to express your unique style. Here are some essential tips on how to effectively layer clothing this winter, ensuring you feel comfortable and look fabulous.
Start with the Right Base Layer
The foundation of any great layered outfit begins with a suitable base layer. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or merino wool. A fitted turtleneck or long-sleeve shirt works perfectly as the first layer. This piece will provide warmth without adding bulk, keeping your silhouette sleek and flattering to your body shape.
The temptation here is to stick on an old vest top or buy cheaply as it wont be seen. At your peril.
Think about investing in something that will wash well and will also look well if you need to remove some layers while inside

Choose Versatile Mid-Layers
Next, incorporate versatile mid-layers to add both warmth and dimension to your outfit. Think of materials like cashmere sweaters, cardigans, or stylish shirts. These pieces are ideal for layering since they can be easily removed if you get too warm indoors. Experiment with textures and colours to enhance your style personality!
My favourite knit of the season is a cardigan. There are lots of them in the shops and I love how you can carry one with you as an extra layer. It also doesn’t feel too restrictive if you tend to get hot and bothered!

Another option is to add a hoodie. This can be a really cool athleisure look, even over something quite dressy. And great for protecting you from the elements too

Play with Length and Proportions
When layering, it’s essential to balance lengths and proportions. If you’re wearing a longer base layer, consider a shorter mid-layer to create a balanced silhouette. Remember, wherever there is a line, it draws the eye. So clever layering can create a waist where perhaps there isn’t one. Or can lengthen the leg which is something most of us want.

Top It Off with an Outer Layer
The outer layer is where you can make a bold fashion statement. Choose a stylish coat or jacket that complements your outfit. A tailored wool coat or a trendy puffer jacket can elevate your look while providing much-needed warmth. Don’t forget to consider the fit of your outer layer; it should allow for easy movement without feeling restrictive. Accessorize for Function and Fashion
Accessories are the finishing touches that can take your layered look from ordinary to extraordinary. Scarves, hats, and gloves not only keep you warm but also add personality to your outfit. Opt for colorful or patterned accessories to brighten up your winter wardrobe. Remember, layering isn’t just about clothing; it’s about how you style every element!
