Expert advice from a Personal Stylist

As the chill of winter sets in, it’s time to wrap up in style. As a personal stylist based in Northern Ireland, I help my clients build their wardrobe to align with their lifestyle. Choosing the coat is arguably one of THE most important elements….because of the elements!!

A winter coat is not just a functional piece of clothing; it’s a statement that can reflect your personality and style. However, with so many options available, choosing the perfect winter coat can be overwhelming. Here are six crucial factors to consider to help you find a coat that suits you perfectly.

And I have done some work for you, and I am sharing some of my favourite finds in the shops for this season. Look at this beauty from Sfera

Body Shape and Fit

Understanding your body shape is vital in finding a coat that flatters your figure. For example, if you have an hourglass shape, consider coats that cinch at the waist to highlight your curves. If you’re more rectangular, look for styles that add volume, such as peacoats or styles that add volume.  Always try on different styles and sizes to find the fit that feels comfortable and looks great on you. Remember, a well-fitted coat can elevate your entire outfit.

Style and Personal Aesthetic

Your winter coat should reflect your personal style. Whether you prefer classic, modern, bohemian, or sporty looks, there’s a coat that matches your aesthetic. If you love timeless pieces, a wool overcoat or a trench coat might be your best bet. For those who enjoy contemporary styles, consider oversized puffer jackets or leather. You will see lots of different textures on the high street this year – fur is huge as well as faux leather.

Don’t shy away from colours and patterns that resonate with your personality. The colours this season are quite dull and cool so beware of investing in a coat that doesn’t match your best season. If you would like to understand your best colours I can provide that service both in person and online

Functionality and Features

Think about how you plan to use your coat. Will you be commuting, attending formal events, or spending time outdoors? Features like pockets, hoods, and zippers can enhance functionality. This is a classic and beautiful coat from Barbour that you just can’t go wrong with if you have a casual style personality.

A detachable hood can add versatility, allowing you to adjust your look based on the weather. You want a coat that allows you to layer comfortably without feeling restricted – no point in having a coat that you cant wear your chunky jumpers underneath.

Lots of beautiful coats have detachable scarves this season which is a lovely, put-together look and practical too.

Quality

Investing in a high-quality winter coat can save you money in the long run. Look for well-constructed pieces made from durable materials that can withstand the wear and tear of winter elements. Pay attention to details like stitching, lining, and zippers—these can be indicators of quality.

If you are buying a woollen-look coat, check the actual wool content on the label. Coats that are 100% wool are expensive but will last you a lifetime if you take care of them. This a STUNNING one from Marella – I would love to have this in my wardrobe!!
