The invite drops onto the hall floor and great excitement ensues, with a fun and glam event looming. It doesn’t last long because then the inevitable, “What am I going to wear” dilemma starts to hit hard.
Don’t panic! Before you do anything, step away from the keyboard and the temptation to start online shopping. You know those purchases that you have never returned? Don’t do it!
There are some foundations that you must get right first

What colours suit you best?
Before you even step into a shop virtually or otherwise, you must know if you are a warm or cool skin tone. If you don’t you are shopping blind. Wearing the colours that work for your skin tone will help you look fresh and well-rested. They help your skin look even and youthful. Wearing the colours that are wrong for you will do exactly the opposite. They can make you look drained and tired. (Insert link to colour palette blog)
Mocha Mousse, the Pantone colour of the year, is a rich brown hue and looks great paired with other brighter colours. To learn more about Pantone colours click here. Those browns are warm and won’t suit a cool skin tone. Other warm tones that you will see are olive green and beautiful buttery yellow.
If you have a cool skin tone there are lots of beautiful subtle pastels in the shops, giving a romantic airy feel. Perfect for a wedding. Pastel pinks are one of my favourites for cool skintones and are flooding the high street stores
There are also lots of cool reds around and burgundy is still here, and looks good on a cool skin tone
If you decide that you aren’t adhering to your colour palette, you can use some tricks with makeup and accessories to ensure that you are looking your best glorious self
The Silhouette for your body shape
Do you know your body shape? If you don’t, how on earth will you understand what suits you?! This is absolutely critical to choosing the right outfit.
Here is my free guide to understanding your body shape
Flowing and Feminine
Billowing chiffons in prints and patterns are perfect for breezy evening events. Look for dresses with integral capes or built-in scarves for added glamour and versatility. However, be cautious of having too much fabric if you are curvy or apple shaped. This style is better suited to rectangles and those that need to create the illusion of curve
Structured Sophistication
Depending on the dress code, I absolutely adore a trouser suit, and lots of them have 3 pieces this season which adds to the drama.

Really works beautifully for showing off your waist like and shoulders to create balance in your silhouette
Black Tie Glamour
They are back! During covid I used to pine for the days of a black tie dinner and thought they would never return. But they have and most of us need our black tie attire refresh.
My advice here is simple. Rent it! Unless you are confident you are going to be happy to wear your expensive evening dress >5 times, you are better to rent it and enjoy it once.
I have several occasions coming up over the next few months and I have hired different dresses from Adorn ( insert link here)
When choosing a dress – firstly think of your colours. Most people do not suit black unless you are a WINTER – so try to opt for something different. Evening dresses looks stunning in metallics or deep gem like colours
Secondly think about the silhouette and if you will be able to move with ease.
The length can be full leg or mid-length. Personally I like to go all out full length for an event that is described as black tie. How often do we get the chance and it is fun to get dressed up in a beautiful gown
Wedding Guest Attire
When attending a wedding, respect the couple’s dress code and avoid wearing white or cream. Opt for:
- A sophisticated midi dress with a cutaway back and bow detail
- A flowing maxi dress with floral prints
- A chic jumpsuit for a modern twist
- Bring a pair of shoes that you can change into if you plan on wearing very high heels
- If you are staying at the venue, bring whatever you need to have a refresh part way through the day

Garden Party Elegance
For daytime outdoor events, choose outfits that are both stylish and practical:
- A tea-length dress in a light, breathable fabric
- A tailored trouser suit in a spring-inspired hue
- A coordinated skirt and top ensemble
Remember, the key to looking your best is feeling confident in what you wear. Choose pieces that reflect your personal style while adhering to the event’s dress code, and you’re sure to make a lasting impression.
