Last week, I talked to you about the principles of transitional dressing as you move from summer into winter Read here
That’s all well and good, but let’s get a bit more specific about exactly what capsule pieces you should be considering if you want a wearable and fabulous wardrobe. One that will serve you for all eventualities over the coming months. It’s important to rely on a solid foundation of wardrobe essentials – all of which can be worn on their own or layered together in different looks
Jacket
It’s very hard to beat a fitted leather jacket, either gritty or refined, depending on your style preference. It is the type of piece that looks so good with jeans or trousers, dresses or skirts. Worn over a shirt and trousers with a heel, it can even add that edge to workwear. It’s a perfect nod to the punk trend that we are seeing coming through (has it ever gone away?)
Another jacket style that I have recommended to some clients is a short-sleeve tweed like this one from Me & Em. It has an elegant, lady-like quality to it, and very on trend with the texture. I would love this with trousers or jeans for workwear now, with a vest top. And it will look fabulous over a long-sleeved turtleneck, dress and boots into the winter

One of these options is a good investment now or you may well have something similar in your wardrobe
Slip dress
Something that you can throw on for a dinner date, feel instantly sexy and put-together, is something that everyone needs! Right?! A dress in a beautiful fabric that skims your curves and is not overly revealing is a great transitional piece for now with sliders.
Pair with your jacket and a pair of biker boots for a slightly grungy, edgy look in the cold evenings

Knitted jumper
Not too chunky for now, but something fine and soft that will look good with your jeans, or a slip skirt will look great. This will equally take you into autumn with a floral mini skirt, thick tights and your biker boots
Jeans
Almost ANYTHING goes when it comes to choosing which style of jeans. Nothing is out of bounds and it is very dependent on your body shape ( it’s a whole separate blog!!)
Once you know your shape, the comfort and fabric are key to taking you through the seasons. Im less likely to wear white or pale denim into winter, but that’s a personal preference. Darker denim tends to be dressier
Once you have selected your favourite pair, transition is all about the footwear. The kick flare is fabulous now with a slider or stiletto. In the winter they look cool with a long leg boot underneath
If you have been watching me on instagram you will know that I have just bought the “Tomboy” jeans from Marella here

Skirts
So many long white skirts around this summer and they will look lovely with a chunky knit and boots into September/October
Fancy a shorter hemline? Your little minis are fab now with trainers and flip flops, but such an easy wear with thick tights and ankle boots

Base layers
A good investment now if a decent base layer. Don’t scrimp on them as they wont look great after a couple of times in the wash. A tee on its own now with your jeans and jacket is the easiest look in the world. But it will also be ideal for layering under your dresses and jumpers as the leaves fall off the trees. Arket and Uniqlo are great for basic layers in a nice quality shop here

Boots
An ankle boot in a neutral colour will look great with slip skirts and dresses now, as well as your jeans. Winter them up with tights once it gets a little cooler
For me, I having been drooling over these western style knee-high suede boots from walk in wardrobe. Here’s the link. I am thrilled with them and will get loads of wear with all my dresses and jeans.Lovely height heel which is an added bonus
